Yesterday we announced the release of Autodesk® Advance Steel 2017. Built on the familiar AutoCAD platform, Advance Steel helps provide engineering and detailing professionals the tools needed to model the details necessary for their structures. The latest version of Advance Steel adds a host of new features and enhancements that help improve productivity and usability, and allow fabrication documents to be drafted and documented more easily to support BIM enabled workflows.
What’s New in Advance Steel
New & Enhanced Modeling Tools
Improved Modeling Efficiency. Advance Steel 2017 provides a new automatic and parametric tool for inserting cold rolled sections (such as purlins and side rails) and their corresponding connections. The macro can be started from the Connection vault and offers various options to select components from one of the five default vendors available. Additional vendors can be added based on your customization and it’s easy to adjust the settings from the properties dialog box. Also included are ready-to-use templates that automatically create bill-of-materials (BOMs) containing bridging components.

Easy Access to Fabrication Data. We’ve also made it easier to access customized fabrication data. Fabrication data properties can be transferred from assemblies to other assemblies (and with their associated attached parts) by using the match properties command. In addition, all tokens for fabrication data information are available for external BOMs and lists on drawings.

Documentation Improvements
Productivity and Appearance. We’ve added a range of new features designed to help you improve productivity and the appearance of your drawings. These include custom clipping symbols, snap points on anchors, grid balloon placement control, repeating your last command, and templates for lists on drawings. Additionally, other improvements allow you to get the beam offset value displayed in labels and improve the display of structural member symbols.
This feature is displayed through the beam label on drawings, and controlled by a token that automatically displays the beam offset value (or position, if the beam is inclined) in the object label in relation to the Plan view on the general arrangement drawing.
Structural members can be displayed as symbols. You have several options to choose from. The Beam symbol is always placed at the end of the line that represents the left side on the assembly drawing of this part.
Bills of Materials (BOMs). BOMs now take advantage of the new flexibility in the templates with user defined formulas such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This helps you add, for example, an extra 5% to your bolt quantity to be shipped at site. In addition, the BOM editor now has a filter tool to help you easily find tokens containing the name or a part of it that you type in the filter cell, and new options for sorting individual tokens within the sorting dialog box.

Out of the box drawings. It’s also now possible to obtain better drawings out of the box. The drawing styles for engineering drawings have been enhanced and are available within a new category in the Drawing Styles tool palette. Advance Steel 2017 comes with a set of additional drawing styles for creating drawings of miscellaneous steel such as stairs, railings and cage ladders. This feature helps you access drawings and helps reduce clean up as with previous Advance Steel releases.

Streamlined Interoperability
Advance Steel Object Enabler. Keeping in mind the importance of workflows, we’ve made changes to Advance Steel that allow you to better access information from other software. For example, the Advance Steel 2017 object enabler gives you the opportunity to open any Advance Steel 2D drawings in plain AutoCAD 2017 or AutoCAD LT 2017. You can’t modify the drawing content; however, you can complete the drawing by inserting AutoCAD dimensions or annotations because you can snap to objects displayed within the drawing. This also means that you can use different Autodesk viewers for drawing revision marks, comments and review, while the drawings are still connected to the Advance Steel 3D model.
Object Enabler lets you view Advance Steel drawings across other Autodesk® software such as AutoCAD 2017 and AutoCAD LT 2017.
Advance Steel 2017 Extension for Revit. You can now better manage changes between Autodesk Revit® and Advance Steel with the “Advance Steel 2017 Extension” for Revit which can be downloaded & installed from the Autodesk App Store website. The 2017 extension comes with a set of various enhancements which offer a higher level of model information exchange, especially with synchronization for Revit models containing steel connections back and forth with Advance Steel. The “Advance Steel 2017 Extension” for Revit is only compliant with Revit 2017.
You can now synchronize steel connections between models created in Revit and/or Advance Steel while still keeping them as intelligent parametric connections.
