Integration between Revit Structure and Autocad Structural Detailing for reinforcement drawings

I got a number of requests on how to use Autocad Structural Detailing (ASD) to produce reinforcement drawings from Revit Structure (RST)

Our vision is to have RST being BIM that contains the design information (in this case 3D reinforcement object) and have ASD to produce shop drawings based on local CAD standards

In this post I am going to explain the workflow between the 2 applications:

  1. Select a RST object and start the equivalent Revit Extension (REX). In my case I am using a column

  2. Define parameters manually or open an existing rebar cage template from the REX file menu

Press OK and the reinforcement is generated

  1. Select the Reinforcement Drawing REX from the icon or from the REX Browser list:

This is going to trigger AutoCAD Structural Detailing. After ASD is ready, you will get the following dialog box in RST:

You can use the default options or if you want to use regional options, please select New project:

Press the preference button and select the options that you want to use:

  2. Press OK to close the preference dialog box and OK to generate the shop drawings in ASD
  3. After the progress bar disappears,
  4. use ALT TAB to switch to ASD

  5. ASD will ask you to position the drawings

    ET Voila!!!

AutoCAD Structural Detailing

We want to reach out to you as we've heard a lot of great feedback from customers on AutoCAD Structural Detailing and wanted to expand more on the topic of this product.

Let me start out by telling you what it is.

AutoCAD® Structural Detailing software is a powerful solution for detailing and creation of fabrication shop drawings for steel and reinforced concrete structures. Use specific modules for fast and efficient generation of steel connections and shop drawings, dynamic concrete models and concrete drawings, and automatic concrete reinforcement definition and concrete shop drawing generation.

The key thing to note is that it is in metric today. I know that it is a problem for you in the US. The reason why we decided to include it in the box for the US market is that customers told us that they wanted to explore the technologies, the workflows and the integration between Revit Structure and AutoCAD Structural Detailing. Customers saw this as a way to explore additional services as their companies and the industries evolve.

We also wanted to let our customers understand how serious we are about the structural business and the type of investments that we are making. I hope that you better understand where we are taking our product portfolio

A few other things to note: AutoCAD Structural Detailing is Integrated with Revit Structure through the extensions and can also be used a standalone product.

We will also be creating an AUGI forum for this product. We will let you know when it is up and running.

Keep checking our blog for more information on AutoCAD Structural Detailing over the next few weeks as well will provide more detailed usage examples of the product .

Send us your feedback….
