How to use the Revit Structure 2010 Element Positioning Extension (released in Subscription Center on April 2009)

Download the Extension from the Subscription Center under the “Revit Extensions for Autodesk Revit Structure 2010” link.

Revit Structure has various tools to adding tags to your structural elements.  One can add them to the element one-by-one or, by using the “Tag all” tool, can add them automatically within the current view.  However, it would be more practical if it could be able to add tags by defining more than just the current view as well as to be able to set a distance for the placement of the tags and number them by element, type, and/or level.   

Revit Structure 2010 now has an extension that will give more flexibility to adding tags within your project.   This Element Positioning extension allows these basic functions:

·         Create a set of elements and divide them into categories and types

·         Sort elements depending on their location in the project

·         Add a tag describing a user-defined position at the location specified

The extension allows loading necessary information from Revit Structure such as:

·         Object category (e.g. beam)

·         Object family (e.g. steel W-section)

·         Object type (e.g. W12x26)

·         Object geometry

·         Object location (level)

·         Material of which the object is made (after you select the option)

·         Bars reinforcing for RC elements (after you select the option)

The Element Positioning dialog is separated into 4 areas:  Elements, Numbering, Naming, and Tags

1.       Elements  - you can select all the elements in the project or select the elements first before launching the extension

 

2.       Numbering – you can define the tag number sequence from the location of the elements and to specify the auxiliary options

3.       Naming – you can define the syntax for each tag position name to include a tag number to display a number by set of objects with identical type and features or by each element, and can also display the  number of the elements’ lowest level.

 

4.       Tags - you select which tag you want to use for the selected category elements, the tag-to-element distance, the place of tag insertion, tag orientation, and if you need a leader added to the tag.

If you need to add the tags to these same type of elements within other views, by picking the “Selected views” option and then the “Select...” button will display the “Selected Views” check box dialog.

Is there anyway to get this extension to work with Revit Architecture?!?! I'd LOVE to be able to have a more powerful selection / filter tool!

Doens this means that the extension mentioned here in this thread is the same version as the one available in the "Revit Extensions for Autodesk Revit Structure 2010" posted 4/16/2009. OR is this a newer version and I have to download the whole extenstion pack again to get the newer version?

I am trying the Element positioning extension and I have more than 100 columns and it seems that the max allowable number is 100.

Hi our inhouse did a quick test and and we are able to tag 200 columns. I was told that there shouldn't be any limitation.

May I suggest you to send your data and file to the Extension support team (robobat.support@autodesk.com) to take a quick look?
